Common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a small, perennial shrub belonging to the Lamiaceae family, emblematic of the Mediterranean scrubland. It is recognizable by its dense, persistent, grey-green foliage, which is particularly aromatic, as well as its small pink flowers clustered in spikes at the tips of the stems. Compact and hardy, it rarely exceeds 30 cm in height.

Adapted to hot, dry climates, thyme grows naturally in poor, stony, well-drained soils on the sunny slopes of hills and scrubland in the South. It is highly resistant to drought, wind, and direct sunlight, making it an ideal plant for rock gardens and dry gardens. It is also cultivated in pots for culinary or medicinal use.

Its highly nectariferous flowering occurs in spring and attracts numerous bees, contributing to the production of thyme honeys renowned for their flavor and antiseptic qualities. In herbal medicine and aromatherapy, thyme is valued for its purifying, tonic, and immune-boosting properties, thanks to its richness in thymol and other aromatic compounds.
