Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is a robust biennial plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), reaching up to 1 meter in height. It is recognizable by its large, downy, grey-green leaves with a characteristic musky fragrance, and its majestic, spike-like inflorescences bearing mauve and white flowers. It emits a sweet, slightly amber, herbaceous scent.

Native to the Mediterranean basin, clary sage thrives in well-drained, calcareous soils and abundant sunshine. It tolerates drought well and flourishes in dry areas, wastelands, or on hillsides. Its summer flowering attracts numerous pollinators, particularly bees, and it remains a popular crop for the extraction of its essential oil.

The flowering tops are harvested and distilled to obtain an essential oil rich in esters and linalool, with balancing, relaxing, and hormone-regulating properties. In aromatherapy, it is commonly used to relieve nervous tension, promote emotional harmony, and support women's health, particularly during menstruation or menopause.
