Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora) is a large tropical tree in the Lauraceae family, reaching 15 to 20 meters in height. It is distinguished by its evergreen foliage, composed of glossy, dark green, lance-shaped leaves. When crushed, these leaves release a fresh, camphor-like scent, a sign of their richness in active compounds.

Native to Asia, the camphor tree was introduced to Madagascar, where it has adapted perfectly, giving rise to a specific variety: ravintsara, with a cineole chemotype. It grows in warm, humid, and sunny areas, in fertile, deep, and well-drained soils. The plant benefits from a tropical climate to fully express its aromatic richness.

Its flowering produces small, creamy-white, inconspicuous but nectar-rich blossoms, followed by small red fruits when ripe. The leaves are harvested for distillation, yielding an essential oil prized in aromatherapy for its antiviral, immune-boosting, and respiratory properties. Gentle and well-tolerated, ravintsara is a must-have during the colder seasons.
