The niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It can reach up to 25 meters in height and is distinguished by its thick, fibrous, white bark that peels off in thin strips, giving it a unique appearance. Its foliage is dense, composed of elongated leaves that release an aromatic scent when crushed.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions, particularly New Caledonia, Australia, and Madagascar, the niaouli tree thrives in sandy, moist, or marshy soils. It prefers sunny locations and tolerates extreme weather conditions well, making it a particularly resilient and useful species for soil stabilization in fragile environments.

Its flowering produces long spikes of white flowers, very rich in nectar, which attract a wide variety of pollinators, especially bees. The leaves are steam-distilled to produce an essential oil with purifying, respiratory, and tonic properties, widely used in aromatherapy, particularly during winter or in cases of temporary fatigue.
