Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Lamiaceae family, recognizable by its square stems and light green, toothed, and slightly crinkled leaves. Its fresh aroma, milder and less mentholated than that of peppermint, makes it a particularly popular variety in cooking and herbal medicine.

It grows easily in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil, preferring sunny to partially shaded locations. Very vigorous, spearmint can spread rapidly if not grown in a pot or bordered. It benefits from regular watering, especially in summer, to maintain the vibrancy of its foliage and the richness of its fragrance.

In summer, it is adorned with small lilac flowers clustered in spikes at the top of the stems, which are very attractive to pollinating insects. Besides its culinary uses – teas, tabbouleh, desserts – spearmint is also used in cosmetics, as an infusion or essential oil, for its refreshing, digestive, and invigorating properties.
