The frankincense tree (Boswellia sacra) is a small tree in the Burseraceae family, known for its gnarled and twisted shape. It grows slowly in extreme environments, often on arid, stony, and steep terrain. Its compound, evergreen leaves are adapted to drought, and its small white flowers bloom in inconspicuous but decorative clusters.

This iconic tree is native to the Horn of Africa, Yemen, and Oman, where it survives in arid areas thanks to its deep roots and its ability to withstand long periods without rain. It prefers poor, stony, and well-drained soils, often calcareous, and grows on mountainsides or in remote desert areas.

The frankincense tree is best known for the aromatic resin it produces, called "olibanum." This resin is harvested by making incisions in the bark, an ancestral skill passed down for millennia. Used in religious rituals, perfumery, and aromatherapy, frankincense essential oil is prized for its soothing, meditative, and regenerative properties.
