The bergamot tree (Citrus aurantium bergamia) is a small fruit tree in the Rutaceae family, growing to a height of 3 to 4 meters. It has deep green, glossy, oval, evergreen foliage and is adorned with highly fragrant white flowers that emit a floral and slightly lemony scent. This tree is both ornamental and aromatic.

It is primarily cultivated in the Calabria region of southern Italy, where the mild Mediterranean climate and well-drained soils provide ideal growing conditions. The bergamot tree needs plenty of sun, protection from cold winds, and regular, but not excessive, watering during the warmer months.

Its fruits, spherical and yellow when ripe, resemble small oranges. Their thick, smooth peel is exceptionally rich in aromatic essence. Bergamot essential oil, obtained by cold pressing, is prized in perfumery for its refined freshness, but also in aromatherapy for its balancing, soothing, and purifying properties.
