The plant

Bergamot essential oil (Citrus bergamia) is extracted from the peel of the fruit of the bergamot tree, a small tree in the family ofRutaceae.

Of modest size, the bergamot tree generally measures between3 and 4 meters highIt has evergreen, dark green, glossy foliage, and is covered in spring withfragrant white flowerswhich give off a delicate, sweet aroma. These flowers give rise to a round to slightly flattened fruit with a thick, granular skin, coloredyellow to pale greenat maturity.

The bergamot fruit is not eaten as is, because its flesh is particularlysour and bitterOn the other hand, its zest is extremely rich inaromatic essences, which makes it the most valuable part of the plant for essential oil extraction.

The bergamot tree is mainly cultivated inCalabria (Italy), region which concentrates the bulk of world production. It is also found in Spain, Turkey or Ivory Coast, but it is the mild and sunny Mediterranean climate of Calabria that allows it to fully develop its aromatic potential.

The essential oil is obtained bycold expression of the zest, a mechanical process that preserves the integrity of its sensitive aromatic molecules.

Featuring a fragrance that is bothFresh, citrusy and slightly floralBergamot essential oil holds a central place in aromatherapy and natural perfumery. It is, in fact, one of the emblematic ingredients of the original recipe for...Cologne.
