The bay laurel (Laurus nobilisBay laurel (Lauraceae), also known as sweet bay, is a Mediterranean tree belonging to the Lauraceae family. It can reach up to 10 meters in height and is recognizable by its glossy, aromatic, dark green, evergreen foliage. Highly prized in gardens and hedges for its elegant silhouette and fragrance, it is also an emblematic plant in traditional cuisine. When crushed, its leaves release a warm, spicy scent that reveals its richness in essential oils.

Bay laurel thrives in well-drained, slightly alkaline soils and prefers sunny, sheltered locations. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. In spring, it is adorned with small, inconspicuous, pale yellow flowers that attract bees, which give way in autumn to black berries. These fruits are sometimes used for decorative or culinary purposes, although it is primarily the leaves that are harvested for their aromatic and medicinal properties.

The essential oil is extracted from these leaves through steam distillation. Rich in 1,8-cineole, eugenol, and linalool, it is traditionally used for its purifying, toning, and balancing properties. Its powerful and enveloping fragrance makes it a comforting remedy during winter or periods of temporary nervous fatigue, while also evoking the sun-drenched landscapes of the Mediterranean.
